In March 2020, just before the world shut down, my friends and I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Iceland. While the Blue Lagoon may be the star of many Icelandic adventures, there’s a world of enchantment waiting to be explored. In this post, we’ll dive into the unique experiences, stunning landscapes, and delightful culinary treasures that make this island a true gem.

See

Chasing waterfalls
  • Waterfalls: Iceland is home to many legendary waterfalls. My favorite was Gullfoss Falls, which was frozen over at the time and so picturesque.
  • Hallgrimskirkja Church: an iconic landmark. It was really beautiful and peaceful inside.
  • Geysir: a cool natural phenomenon that’s pretty fun to witness in-person with other tourists.

Do

Blue Lagoon
  • Blue Lagoon: a super relaxing and unreal experience. Wade through these geothermal waters to get to the face mask station and a swim-up bar with smoothies and alcoholic drinks. Given the proximity to the airport, would recommend doing this either right after you arrive or before you leave Iceland!
  • Splinavir: a cozy board game café. On a particularly chilly night, we grabbed hot chocolate, hung out, and played games.
  • Drive Around: would recommend doing a drive from Reykjavik to Vik. A very scenic drive as you make your way out there.

Eat

The pastry that changed my life.
  • Braud Bakery: my favorite bakery in the whole entire world. Scrumptious and flaky pastries. I still dream about this place.
  • Bonus Grocery: beloved Icelandic grocery store (with the cutest pink pig logo). We would sometimes pick up fresh ingredients to create our own meals in the comfort of our accommodation. A nice and cost-effective option.
  • Thai Flavors at Mai Thai: a surprising culinary gem awaited us in Reykjavik — an authentic Thai restaurant. Plenty of veggie options and the friendliest staff.
  • Hlemmur Food Hall: vibrant food hall with a range of culinary delights. A haven for foodies and a testament to Iceland’s evolving gastronomy.

Stay

No better place to be snowed in than at Hotel Vík í Mýrdal
  • Hotel Vík í Mýrdal: Beautifully designed hotel in Vik with breakfast included. Has its own restaurant and bar. We were snowed in for a couple of days in Vik and didn’t mind at all that we got to spend it in this hotel.
  • Hilton Reykjavik Nordica: centrally located and walking distance to downtown. Fun fact — it’s been featured on The Bachelor!

I’m looking forward to going back here someday! Hope this encourages you all to check out Iceland, too. :)
